EAC inquiry into the fertiliser market
The Advisory Centre for Competition Law & Policy in Africa is pleased to support the East African Community Competition Authority's inquiry into the fertiliser market.
Access to fertiliser is key for food security. However, following the increase in fertiliser prices across the region in 2021, prices have not reduced in alignment with international markets. These high prices are detrimental to consumers, farmers, and to governments subsidising fertiliser prices.
To better understand the state of competition in the fertiliser sector within the East African Community, this market inquiry will:
determine fertilisers trading patterns including relevant product and geographic markets
examine the market structure and market concentration level
analyze the cost components and price patterns of fertilizer over five years in the industry value chain
establish whether barriers to entry and exit exist
establish if there are anti-competitive practices in the industry value chain
