Reshaping the poultry value chain through competition enforcement

The poultry value chain needs to be reshaped through policies that support resilient and inclusive regional value chains, the monitoring of markets in real time to assess the implications of climate change on agricultural production, and the ramping up regional competition enforcement so markets work more effectively. These are the key conclusions from the report, Competition issues and regional integration in soybean and animal feed to poultry markets within and across Kenya, Malawi and Zambia, published by CCRED.

According to the report, the east and southern African (ESA) region continues to be a net importer of poultry products despite increased soybean production in Malawi and Zambia (inputs into poultry feed) and the investments in breeding operations for the supply of day-old chicks in Zambia.

Prices for maize, and, in some instances, soybeans have been substantially lower than international prices, yet prices to producers of poultry feed and day-old chicks, have been very high. These market outcomes indicate that the poultry industry across countries is neither competitive nor inclusive.
