Competition in soybean to poultry markets in Tanzania

Poultry is one of the cheapest sources of protein and with the least impact on the environment. In Tanzania, the industry is in its infancy. Consumption and production are currently low but high population growth rates, urbanisation and increasing incomes suggest growing demand.

The development of the sector depends on building production capabilities at the different levels of the value chain, from farming of maize and soybeans used for the poultry feed to the expansion of poultry breeding stock. Tanzania and neighbouring countries in the East and Southern African region have excellent conditions to expand their agricultural production.

However, this report highlights that input costs have been extremely high over the period 2018 to 2023 in Tanzania. Prices of day-old chicks and poultry feed have been some 50% higher than in other countries such as South Africa and Brazil. Poultry producers face negative margins if selling their poultry at the prevailing market prices set by the large integrated poultry producers.
